Things to Make Note Of if You Have Loose Teeth as an Adult
Posted on 12/7/2020 by Christensen Family Dentistry
It can be very alarming to have one of your permanent teeth suddenly feel loose. If you did not recently experience a traumatic injury like falling down or being struck in the face, then your loose tooth is most likely the sign of a serious dental issue. You should call our office immediately if one of your adult teeth feels loose and make note of any unusual symptoms you may have experienced lately that could point to one of the following causes.
Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is very harmful to your teeth and can even cause permanent teeth to loosen over time. Many people grind their teeth while they sleep or during the day without even realizing that they are doing it. Bruxism can cause symptoms such as tension headaches, neck and shoulder pain, jaw or facial soreness, or even earaches. Let us know if you have experienced any of these symptoms leading up to your tooth coming loose, because we can fit you for a mouth guard or look into other treatments to address your teeth grinding.
Gum Disease
Another explanation for an adult tooth loosening is gum disease. Advanced gum disease can contribute to jawbone deterioration, which causes your teeth to loosen. Gum disease can usually be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene, but severe gum disease needs to be treated with a root canal, scaling and root planing procedure, or gum graft surgery. If you have noticed symptoms such as persistent bad breath, gums that feel swollen or tender, bleeding gums, pain with chewing, or receding gums, you might have gum disease.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes diminished bone density. Osteoporosis can weaken your jawbone, resulting in loose teeth. If you have osteoporosis, you may not experience any symptoms until your tooth becomes loose. We will be able to detect signs of osteoporosis at your appointment by examining your mouth and taking X-rays. Call our office as soon as one of your permanent teeth feels loose so we can figure out the cause and provide the appropriate treatment.
